Ubbe was strong AND smart, he's the second best of Ragnar's sons behind Bjorn. Ivar is very cunning and intelligent but he's also very dumb, vulnerable and obviously dishonorable, even though i empathize with his character 100%. Vitserk was a bad character and him eliminating Bjorns mother was an atrocious end to one of the best characters in the show who'd been there since the first couple scenes of the pilot. Me and all my homies hate Hvitserk Lothbrok. Sigurd being eliminated prematurely by Ivar was good i loved it.
If he had tried that with Bjorn, this would have gone differently. Then again, the whole thing was done to confront the obvious blue elefant in the room and get a measure on his other sons.
Ubbe stepping up doesn't get spoken about enough. Took it upon himself to be the one who went forward, not because he wanted to, but because he had to. Thats how I felt anyway, that moment alone made Ubbe one of my favorite characters.

Ivar smiling at his dad with complete admiration as he returns (especially knowing his dad is moving pieces in a unconventional manner). I truly believe regadless of bjorn fitting his fathers mold perfectly along with the other sons and their differences/placements in the lineage that ivar was his favorite son. This series was all around amazing.. Ubbe is also awesome and extremely underated.
This is how Ubbe character was built to respect unconditionally the great warriors from vikings. That made him a person with great abilities who found new places with his abilities and survived at any circumstances.

Especially since it was Ubbe who looked the most determined to fight, but even Ubbe’s face showed hesitation. The scene would have gone completely different if Ubbe blocked the slap or even tried to dodge it. So Ragnar was seeing if Ubbe had the strength in him to rise up to the occasion. Which Ubbe kind of proved he did at the end, when he walked up.
He did this to “challenge the seer” the same way he tried to hang himself earlier as he wanted to prove the seer wrong,, also he hugged the only one who had enough balls to come forward hence showing to his sons that he respects strength and the stronger one will get the “dad’s approval” , this is evident by ivar’s facial expressions, he also taunts ivar earlier on regarding his cripple/weakness. I think this is the crucial moment where ivar starts to become the maniac

Playing these roles must have been awesome for these guys, but I have just realized for the duration the season happened they had to go out in public with those hair styles. Especially Ivar. Hvitserk had it easy the most.

Never watched the show except a few pieces frow here and there but I have to admit it seems brilliant. This scene alone gather so much subtilities of power and human movements. Fascinating. I could go on and on but I fear to fail a clear analysis without futher context. Genuinely a great piece of acting, especially on the look of each sons. You can tell that there are the words only possessed by the father, and yet they each speak clear and loud just by theirs gazes. Stunning performances
When Ubbe steps in , then Ragnar walked towards him and hugged him. He rested assure that his sons are brave and wont hesitate to kill him to lead. He saw leadership in one of them at least. The hug was a sign of relief not cowardliness as he didn’t mind to die.
I don't know if it was done on purpose but I just noticed how much Ubbe looks like early seasons Ragnar in this scene. Maybe a parallel to when Ragnar killed king Horik earlier in the show
